Rory McIlroy maintained his bid for a historic seventh Race to Dubai title with an impressive second-round performance at the DP World Tour Championship in Dubai. The Northern Irishman carded a three-under 69, positioning himself in a five-man tie for second at nine under par, alongside notable names including Ireland’s Shane Lowry and England’s Justin Rose.
Nicolai Hojgaard Leads the Field
Denmark’s Nicolai Hojgaard surged to the top of the leaderboard with a blistering 65 on day two, giving him a three-shot advantage over the chasing pack. McIlroy acknowledged the challenges of the round:
“I had to battle a little more today. I felt like I showed my scoring skills and stayed patient, and got the ball up and down when I needed to. Overall, to shoot 69, I’m pretty pleased considering some of the spots that I found myself.”
McIlroy’s round featured six birdies and three bogeys, demonstrating both his resilience and tactical acumen on the demanding course in the United Arab Emirates.
Race to Dubai Standings
The 36-year-old holds a 767-point lead at the top of the season-long Race to Dubai rankings, putting him on track for a fourth consecutive victory in the season-long competition, previously known as the European Tour’s Order of Merit.
Only Tyrrell Hatton and Marco Penge remain mathematically capable of overtaking McIlroy, though they sit joint-11th and joint-44th respectively, making it highly likely that McIlroy will claim the prestigious title once again.
Notable Performances
Ryder Cup teammate Tommy Fleetwood sits among the eight-under group after ending a remarkable streak of 68 consecutive holes without a bogey when he dropped a shot at the 12th hole. Fleetwood shares seventh place with Robert MacIntyre, Alex Noren, and Laurie Canter, while Tyrrell Hatton trails by one shot.
With consistent form and his wealth of experience on the European Tour, McIlroy remains the man to beat as the DP World Tour Championship heads into its final rounds.
