McIlroy Crowned BBC Sports Personality of the Year 2025
Golfer Rory McIlroy has been voted BBC Sports Personality of the Year 2025, capping a remarkable season in which he achieved golfing immortality by completing the career Grand Slam and played a pivotal role in Europe’s Ryder Cup victory.
The 36-year-old from Holywood, Northern Ireland, claimed the prestigious public-voted award after one of the most successful years of his career, marked by historic triumphs, emotional comebacks, and sustained excellence on the global stage.
Masters Victory Completes Career Grand Slam
McIlroy’s defining moment came in April at Augusta National, where he won The Masters to complete the set of all four major championships.
By securing the green jacket, McIlroy became just the sixth man in history to achieve the career Grand Slam and the first European to do so. He joined an elite group consisting of Gene Sarazen, Ben Hogan, Jack Nicklaus, Tiger Woods, and Gary Player.
Having already won the US Open, The Open Championship, and the US PGA Championship by 2014, McIlroy endured an agonising 11-year wait to claim the one major that had eluded him.
Dramatic Final Day at Augusta
The Masters victory was delivered in dramatic fashion. McIlroy entered the final round with a two-shot lead, only to see it disappear after an opening-hole double bogey revived painful memories of past disappointments.
A blistering run of birdies restored control before another stumble on the back nine set up a nerve-shredding finish. After missing a putt to win outright, McIlroy was forced into a sudden-death play-off against Ryder Cup teammate Justin Rose.
Displaying extraordinary composure, McIlroy birdied the first play-off hole to secure his first Masters title. Overcome with emotion, he collapsed to the turf and wept as years of near-misses and heartbreak gave way to triumph.
“A moment like that makes all the years and all the close calls worth it,” McIlroy later said.
Ryder Cup Glory on American Soil
McIlroy’s historic year continued with a standout performance at the Ryder Cup, where he helped Team Europe defeat the United States at Bethpage Black in New York — Europe’s first Ryder Cup win on American soil since 2012.
He contributed three-and-a-half points from five matches, playing a key leadership role in a hostile environment. The tournament was marred by crowd abuse, including an incident in which McIlroy’s wife Erica was struck by a thrown drink, prompting him to condemn what he called “unacceptable and abusive behaviour”.
With six wins from eight Ryder Cup appearances, McIlroy is now widely tipped as a future European Ryder Cup captain.
“I would love to be the European team captain at some point,” he said. “But that will be when I’m not good enough to make the team.”
Dominance Across the PGA and DP World Tours
Beyond the majors and team events, McIlroy enjoyed consistent success throughout the season. He won the Players Championship, the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, and thrilled home fans by lifting the Irish Open trophy for the second time.
He capped the year by winning his seventh Race to Dubai title, his fourth in succession, underlining his status as one of the most dominant golfers of his generation.
Emotional Acceptance Speech
Upon receiving the Sports Personality of the Year award, McIlroy expressed gratitude to fellow nominees and reflected on the significance of the year.
“2025 has been the year I made my dreams come true,” he said. “From Augusta to the Ryder Cup and everything in between. It’s the year dreams are made of.”
He also paid tribute to his family, thanking his parents for their sacrifices and describing his wife Erica and daughter Poppy as his “rock”.
“I grew up watching these awards on TV. It was always a big part of the run-up to Christmas,” he added. “I am very honoured to get my hands on this trophy.”
Final Standings and Historic Recognition
England rugby union star Ellie Kildunne finished second in the voting, while Formula 1 driver Lando Norris placed third.
McIlroy becomes only the third golfer to win BBC Sports Personality of the Year, following Dai Rees (1957) and Nick Faldo (1989). He is also the third Northern Irish winner, after Barry McGuigan and Sir AP McCoy.
Earlier in the evening, McIlroy and Tommy Fleetwood collected the Team of the Year award on behalf of Team Europe for their Ryder Cup success.
A Year That Defined a Legacy
From completing the career Grand Slam to conquering the Ryder Cup and dominating season-long competitions, 2025 stands as the most complete year of Rory McIlroy’s career.
As one of golf’s modern greats, McIlroy has not only added silverware but cemented a legacy that will endure well beyond this historic season.
