Panaji, January 17, 2026 — In a shocking double murder case in Goa, a 37-year-old Russian man has been arrested after his live-in partner and another woman were found dead, police said on Friday. The accused, Aleksei Leonov, allegedly committed the murders in north Goa, and the investigation is ongoing to determine the motive.
Discovery of the First Victim
The case came to light when Elena Kasthanova, 37, was found dead in a rented room in Arambol, north Goa. Her landlord discovered the body on Thursday, noting that her arms were tied behind her back and her throat had been slit. Kasthanova had been residing in Goa since 2024 and was reportedly in a live-in relationship with Leonov.
Authorities described the scene as violent, with multiple injuries indicating a brutal assault. “The accused assaulted his friend who he was staying with and wrongfully restrained her, caused her multiple injuries, and slit her neck with a sharp weapon,” a police officer, speaking on condition of anonymity, said.
Arrest and Confession
Leonov was arrested around 4 a.m. on Friday following the discovery. During interrogation, he confessed to killing a second woman, identified as Elena Vaneeva, 37, whose body was found in neighbouring Morjim. Details regarding Vaneeva’s relationship with Leonov or any potential motive behind the killings are still unclear.
Police said the investigation is at an early stage, with authorities gathering evidence, including the alleged murder weapon. Both bodies have been sent for post-mortem examination to establish the exact cause of death.
Legal Action
Leonov has been booked under sections 103 (murder) and 126(2) (wrongful restraint) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. Police are continuing their investigation to ascertain the reasons behind the crime and whether any additional parties or factors were involved.
