Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali has signed a contract extension during his betting ban, keeping him tied to the club potentially until 2030.
Background
Tonali joined Newcastle in July 2023 from AC Milan for £55m on an initial five-year deal. Later that year, the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) handed him a 10-month betting ban. Newcastle supported Tonali through the suspension, and during this period, both parties discussed a contract extension.
The midfielder extended his deal by one year until 2029, with the club holding an option for an additional 12 months, potentially running the contract through 2030.
“His physicality is one of the standout attributes that he possesses… He possesses a couple of gear changes but then you add to that his technical ability and tactical understanding, it does make him a really good player,” said head coach Eddie Howe.
Tonali’s Impact
Since returning from suspension, Tonali has become indispensable for Newcastle:
- Carries the ball further than any other Newcastle player this season (1,722 yards).
- Only Kieran Trippier has completed more passes and had more touches.
- Defensively, only Sven Botman has made more blocks, and only Malick Thiaw and Dan Burn have made more interceptions.
Howe’s decision to shift Tonali to the number six role unlocked Newcastle’s best performances, helping the club end a 70-year wait for a major domestic trophy and secure Champions League qualification last season.
Even amid a mixed start to the Premier League, Tonali continues to influence games both technically and physically, highlighting his commitment to the club.
Looking Ahead
Newcastle’s extension secures one of their most important players, giving the club flexibility for future contract discussions and stability after losing Alexander Isak last summer. Tonali’s performance on and off the ball underscores why he remains a central figure under Howe.
