Sanwo-Olu: 140 Million Gallons Per Day Adiyan Water Project Ready Next Year

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has announced that the much-anticipated Adiyan Waterworks One and Two Projects will be completed next year, providing 140 million gallons of water per day to residents of Lagos. The massive project is set to be a major milestone in the Governor’s commitment to ensuring clean, reliable potable water for the state’s growing population.

Adiyan Waterworks: A Game-Changer for Lagos

Speaking during a site inspection of the Adiyan Waterworks One and Two Projects, located in the Iju, Adiyan, and Akute areas (which span both Lagos and Ogun States), Sanwo-Olu emphasized that the project would dramatically transform water production and distribution in the state.

Once completed, each of the two plants will have a 70 million gallon-per-day capacity, adding up to a total of 140 million gallons per day. The Adiyan Waterworks is a crucial component of Lagos’ effort to modernize its water infrastructure and provide sustainable solutions to the city’s water needs.

Progress of the Project

Governor Sanwo-Olu commended the contractor for the progress made so far, noting that more than eight kilometers of pipes had already been laid. The Governor also expressed satisfaction with the rights of way granted by the Ogun State Government, with compensation paid to affected property owners.

The Governor assured residents that the brown water from the Ogun River would be treated, turning it into clean, safe drinking water that would be supplied to various households across Lagos. The Adiyan Waterworks Two project, as well as the rehabilitation of Adiyan Waterworks One, are expected to be completed before the end of next year.

Rehabilitating Akilo Water Facility

During the same visit, Governor Sanwo-Olu also commissioned the rehabilitated Akilo Water Facility in the Ogba area of Lagos. The facility, with a capacity of one million gallons per day, will serve the Agege, Ifako-Ijaiye, and surrounding communities, benefiting over 100,000 residents.

The Akilo Mini Waterworks, rehabilitated through the efforts of WaterAid Nigeria under the Urban Water and Sanitation Access Project (UWASAP), is a critical project aimed at ensuring that sustainable water systems are built in Lagos. This project is part of the Lagos State Government’s broader strategy to enhance water governance and provide reliable water sources to underserved communities.

Ensuring Sustainability and Community Involvement

Governor Sanwo-Olu urged Lagos residents to take ownership of these newly commissioned water facilities, emphasizing the importance of protecting the infrastructure. He advised the public to avoid damaging water pipes and bypassing meters, which undermine the sustainability of water supply systems.

In his speech, Tokunbo Wahab, the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, commended WaterAid Nigeria for their partnership in providing access to clean water. He also highlighted key upgrades to the Akilo Water Facility, including a modern control panel room, automated motor kiosks, and integrated water meters that will improve transparency and water management.

Looking Ahead: A Replicable Model for Lagos and Beyond

The Country Director of WaterAid Nigeria, Evelyn Mere, described the Akilo project as a replicable model that could be used to extend safe water access to even more areas in Lagos and beyond. WaterAid is already planning the rehabilitation of the Ojokoro Waterworks to expand safe water access to another 100,000 residents.

Engr. Mukhtaar Tijani, the Managing Director of Lagos Water Corporation, said the Akilo Waterworks, which had been out of service before its rehabilitation, would now provide essential water to Akilo, Agege, and neighboring communities.

A New Dawn for Water Supply in Lagos

The Governor’s visit to the Adiyan and Akilo water projects underscores Lagos State’s commitment to solving the age-old problem of water scarcity in the state. Oba Egbeyemi Oladimeji, the Ologba of Ogba, also praised the state government for its efforts, calling the water project a symbol of hope for the residents of the community.

With clean water now reaching more residents of Lagos through these projects, Governor Sanwo-Olu’s administration is steadily fulfilling its promise to improve infrastructure and living conditions for the people of Lagos.
