Senator representing Kaduna South, Sunday Marshall Katung, is set to officially defect from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) on Saturday, November 1, 2025.
The move ends 25 years of the zone’s consistent loyalty to the PDP and reflects a major political shift in Southern Kaduna.
According to sources, Katung’s decision followed weeks of consultations with key APC leaders in Kaduna and Abuja, including Governor Uba Sani and members of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s inner circle. Analysts say the defection signals a realignment with the prevailing political realities in the state.
Katung had dismissed earlier reports of defection as speculation, with his office describing the rumours as distractions from his legislative duties. A source added that Southern Kaduna can no longer afford to remain in opposition while development opportunities pass by, noting that since Nigeria’s return to democracy in 1999, all senators from the region had been elected under the PDP, cementing its status as a “Southern pillar” of the party in Kaduna State.
