Shaibu Husseini: Redefining NFVCB in Two Years

Since its creation, the National Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB) has been under scrutiny by Nigerian creatives, who longed for visionary leadership. That vision, many agree, began taking shape with the appointment of Dr. Shaibu Husseini by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in 2024.

A creative and journalist, Husseini has transformed the board’s operations, relationships, and global standing over the past two years. His appointment was widely applauded by industry stakeholders, and his results have not disappointed.

In a recent interview, Dr. Husseini attributed his achievements to divine guidance, a committed team, and staff welfare, emphasizing that a motivated team is central to delivering impactful results.

“My mission has been simple: to make processes faster, protect our creators’ intellectual property, and balance creativity with regulation,” he said.

Under his leadership, the NFVCB has:

  • Reduced wait times for film classification, enabling creators to release their work without delays.
  • Shifted the focus from censorship to classification and craft protection, championing new laws that empower creativity.
  • Taken a firm stance against unauthorized streaming and unclassified uploads on platforms like YouTube.
  • Promoted media literacy and capacity building, directly impacting the next generation of Nigerian filmmakers.

Dr. Husseini highlighted that collaboration remains the heartbeat of Nollywood. Whether attending local or international panels, streamlining digital licensing, or facilitating creative partnerships, he remains committed to building a transparent and globally competitive industry.

Reflecting on his tenure, he said:

“Two years down at the NFVCB – two years of service, learning, and impact. I am grateful to God, to Mr. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and to Hon. Minister Hanatu Musa Musawa for their trust. I am also thankful to the dedicated team and stakeholders who made this journey meaningful and worthwhile.”
