Sheikh Gumi Proposes ‘Marshall Plan’ to Phase Out Almajiri System in Northern Nigeria

Controversial Islamic scholar Sheikh Ahmad Gumi has called for a comprehensive ‘Marshall Plan’ to gradually end the Almajiri system in Northern Nigeria.

Gumi argued that the North has the potential to lead Nigeria’s education sector within 15 years, citing the region’s 150 public and private universities as a foundation for progress.

In a post on X, he emphasized that a blended curriculum combining moral teachings with modern education should be adopted to replace the Almajiri system. He also stressed that peace is essential for the plan to succeed.

Northern Nigeria has enough educational institutions to drive major progress if the right policies are implemented. What is needed is a Marshall Plan to phase out the Almajiri system while combining moral education with modernity, and peace is necessary,” Gumi said.
