Shettima Welcomes Bayelsa Governor Diri into APC

Yenagoa – Governor Douye Diri of Bayelsa State has officially joined the All Progressives Congress (APC), marking a significant shift in the state’s political landscape following his resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on October 15, 2025.

The ceremony, held at the Samson Siasia Sports Complex in Yenagoa, saw Diri being received into the APC by National Chairman Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda, Vice President Kashim Shettima, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, APC governors led by Hope Uzodinma of Imo, and other party leaders from across the country.

Speaking at the event on behalf of President Bola Tinubu, Vice President Shettima praised Governor Diri for aligning with the APC-led federal government. He described Diri’s defection as a “redemptive moment in Nigeria’s political history,” adding that the governor’s decision reflects a commitment to unity, development, and service above partisanship.

“She has built roads, bridges, and schools; she has connected lives and given hope to the people. Politics is not about noise, it is about impact. Today, Governor Diri joins a progressive family that thinks and acts together,” Shettima said.

Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda, APC National Chairman, expressed gratitude to Governor Diri and the people of Bayelsa for embracing the party. “Bayelsa State is now APC. We entrust you with the leadership of the party in the state. Sweep out the PDP and ensure APC dominance in the 2027 elections,” he declared, handing over the APC flag to Diri.

Governor Diri, in his remarks, said his decision to join the APC was driven by the crisis within the PDP and the visionary leadership of President Tinubu. He highlighted that the move was strategic and in the best interest of Bayelsa citizens, aimed at accelerating the state’s development.

“Over the years, the unity within PDP eroded, making meaningful reform difficult. After careful consultation, we have formally joined APC. We are committed to strengthening the party and working collaboratively with the federal government to bring tangible benefits to our people,” Diri said.

He also commended President Tinubu for his support for Bayelsa and the Ijaw people, citing the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Road project as an example of infrastructure and economic opportunities poised to benefit the state.

Governor Diri affirmed his support for President Tinubu’s 2027 re-election and pledged to work with APC structures to ensure the party’s growth and success in Bayelsa State.
