Telangana police have arrested Amit Raj Sinha, managing director and CEO of Sigachi Industries, in connection with the June 30, 2025, industrial accident at the company’s Pashamylaram Industrial Area unit in Sangareddy district, which claimed 46 lives and left eight others missing.
Custody and Legal Proceedings
Sinha was taken into custody based on complaints registered at Bhanur police station soon after the incident. He was presented before a local magistrate court on Sunday evening and remanded to 14 days of judicial custody, after which he was shifted to Kandi district jail.
Sigachi Industries confirmed the arrest, stating that it was cooperating fully with the legal process while safeguarding its rights. The company reiterated support for the families of the deceased and injured, emphasizing its commitment to fulfilling responsibilities.
Background of the Accident
The tragedy occurred when an industrial dryer exploded at the Sigachi plant, killing 46 workers. Eight others remained untraceable in the aftermath. The incident triggered widespread outrage, prompting demands for accountability and proper compensation. Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy visited the site and announced that the company would ensure ₹1 crore compensation for the next of kin of each deceased worker.
Complaints and Investigation
Victims’ families had filed complaints alleging gross negligence by Sigachi’s management. Police registered cases against company officials under Sections 105, 110, 118(1), and 118(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
In November, advocate Kalapala Babu Rao petitioned the Telangana High Court, alleging delays in compensation disbursal. The High Court division bench of Chief Justice Aparesh Kumar Singh and Justice G.M. Mohiuddin ordered a detailed investigation and questioned police for not making arrests earlier.
The state government reported that families of the 46 deceased workers had received ₹42 lakh each, while the eight missing workers’ families initially received ₹25 lakh. Following the court’s intervention, Sigachi Industries released an additional ₹17 lakh per missing worker through the Labour Department.
Technical and high-level inquiry committees investigating the explosion concluded that negligence by the company management was the primary cause of the disaster.
The arrest marks a significant step in holding corporate officials accountable for industrial safety lapses, amid ongoing scrutiny and public concern over workplace safety standards in Telangana.
