Simu Liu Shares Excitement About Working With Marvel Legends in Upcoming Avengers: Doomsday

Simu Liu, the 36-year-old actor best known for his role as Shang-Chi, is opening up about his upcoming return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) in the highly anticipated Avengers: Doomsday. The film is slated for release on December 18, 2026, and Liu says that reprising his role “means everything” to him.

Shang-Chi Actor Simu Liu Reflects on MCU Journey

In an exclusive interview with PEOPLE, Liu discussed the significance of working alongside some of the legendary actors he grew up idolizing in the Marvel franchise. “It’s such a privilege to have played a character that resonated with so many different people,” Liu said. His portrayal of Shang-Chi in 2021’s Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings helped redefine superhero representation, giving audiences a hero who was culturally significant and universally inspiring.

Liu added, “Part of that excitement comes from getting to put the suit back on again, except this time with actors I grew up idolizing. Now, I get to call them my co-workers.” His statement highlights the emotional connection he feels to the MCU, a franchise that shaped his childhood and career ambitions.

Returning Marvel Stars and New Additions

Avengers: Doomsday promises to unite both classic and new MCU characters, creating a cinematic event reminiscent of 2018’s Avengers: Infinity War and 2019’s Avengers: Endgame. Iconic actors such as Chris Hemsworth, Chris Evans, Robert Downey Jr., Scarlett Johansson, Mark Ruffalo, and Jeremy Renner will return, with Robert Downey Jr. taking on the role of the main villain, Doctor Doom.

Additionally, characters from the Fantastic Four, Thunderbolts, and X-Men will appear in the film, expanding the MCU’s universe and raising excitement among fans worldwide. Liu expressed gratitude for the MCU fanbase, noting how their support has propelled his career. “I’m always going to be beyond grateful for the fans,” he said, acknowledging the role they’ve played in his journey.

Shang-Chi Fans Eager for More

Since his debut in 2021, Shang-Chi hasn’t appeared in other Marvel movies, much to the disappointment of fans. Liu admits he’s aware of the demand: “Somebody tells me in some way, shape, or form — every single day of my life — that they want more of Shang-Chi.”

The actor also revealed that the original Shang-Chi cast keeps in touch through an active group text, sharing the special bond formed during filming. Liu described working on large-scale productions like Avengers: Doomsday as a “gargantuan experience” that he will remember for the rest of his life.

Simu Liu on Life-Changing Role

Reflecting on his career, Liu said that playing Shang-Chi has given him “absolutely everything” in his life, a sentiment that demonstrates the personal and professional impact of the role. His journey with the character has been a defining moment, allowing him to connect with audiences globally while working alongside his childhood heroes.

Upcoming Projects

Before reprising Shang-Chi, Liu will voice a character in Netflix’s animated film In Your Dreams, released on November 14, 2025. Directed by Alex Woo, the film features a talented voice cast including Cristin Milioti, Craig Robinson, Omid Djalili, and Gia Carides. Fans can stream the movie on Netflix while awaiting Liu’s return in the MCU.

Avengers: Doomsday is set to be one of the most highly anticipated superhero films of 2026, promising epic action, fan-favorite characters, and cinematic storytelling that continues the legacy of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
