Bristol Rovers have appointed experienced manager Steve Evans in a bid to reverse their struggling League Two campaign and steer the club away from the relegation zone.
The League Two side parted ways with Darrell Clarke following a 3-0 home defeat to Swindon Town, marking their tenth consecutive league loss. The loss left Rovers rooted in the relegation zone, prompting the board to act swiftly in securing a seasoned manager to guide the team through the remainder of the season.
Steve Evans Returns to Management
Evans, 63, has been out of work since his departure from Rotherham United in March 2025. During his time away from management, he has focused on his health, shedding seven stone (44.4kg) through a rigorous fitness regime.
The Scot boasts an extensive managerial resume, with over 1,000 career games, including more than 700 in the English Football League (EFL). His previous clubs include Leeds United, Mansfield Town, Peterborough United, Gillingham, and Stevenage, highlighting his vast experience across multiple tiers of English football.
Evans signed a contract to manage Bristol Rovers until the end of the 2025–26 season and is set to make his managerial debut away to Crewe Alexandra on Friday at 19:45 GMT.
Evans’ Ambitions for Bristol Rovers
Speaking on his appointment, Evans said:
“It’s fantastic to be here at Bristol Rovers. This is a very traditional club, and I have always said that coming here is a real challenge. I’m really looking forward to it. It’s a huge club, but I’m mindful of the immediate challenge and eager to get down to work.”
Director of football Ricky Martin expressed confidence that Evans would bring the leadership and experience needed to guide the Gas through this difficult period:
“Steve brings a wealth of experience at this level, a deep understanding of the demands of EFL football, and a proven ability to get the best out of his players. His teams are known for their work ethic, organisation, and commitment, all qualities central to what we are building here.”
Evans will be assisted by Paul Raynor, who has a historical connection with the club, having had a loan spell as a player with the Gas in 1984.
Immediate Challenges Ahead
Bristol Rovers face a significant challenge to avoid relegation from League Two, with Evans tasked with restoring confidence, improving performances, and instilling tactical discipline in a squad struggling for form. His appointment brings hope to supporters eager to see the club climb out of the drop zone and re-establish itself as a competitive force in the division.
