Over 500 law graduates of Abia State University (ABSU), Uturu, who completed their studies between two and four years ago, have raised concerns that the University has yet to approve their names for Law School enrollment.
The students described the situation as unfair and frustrating, noting that despite completing all academic requirements, their repeated appeals have been ignored in favor of recent graduating sets. Some fear that the University plans to only compile names of the 2025 graduating set, effectively prolonging their wait.
“It has been frustrating and shameful staying at home after about four years of finishing our studies. Let our names be approved for Law School,” said Miss Cherry, a spokesperson for the students, in tears.
Professor Chijioke Collins, Dean of the Faculty of Law, confirmed the issue, attributing it to a backlog inherited from his predecessor. He revealed that approximately 700 students are yet to attend Law School, but assured that measures are being taken to address the situation.
“We are compiling a new set to go in February 2026, and a supplementary set may begin in April. If anybody’s name is not here now, it may still come up in April,” Collins said.
The students have appealed to Governor Alex Otti and the University management to expedite the approval process, so they can proceed to Law School and eventually be called to the bar.
