Human rights activist and #BringBackOurGirls co-convener Aisha Yesufu has called on the National Assembly to summon President Bola Tinubu to explain what the government is doing to protect Nigerians amid rising insecurity.
In an open letter to the legislature on Monday, Yesufu urged lawmakers to pass legislation that strengthens security agencies and tackles the root causes of crime, stressing that the National Assembly must act in the best interests of the people.
Reacting to the ongoing wave of kidnappings, killings, and attacks across the country, she said, “Nigerians are being hunted like animals—abducted or killed in schools, places of worship, on roads, farms, markets, and even in their homes. Nowhere is safe.”
Yesufu criticized the National Assembly for failing to speak out on behalf of citizens, arguing that lawmakers have instead defended the executive. “As a citizen of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, I am dismayed that the Assembly has failed to fulfil its constitutional duties. It has become a rubber-stamp body, complicit in the country’s descent into chaos,” she added.
