Super Eagles Eye Fourth AFCON Title After Strong Group Stage Showing

After the first round of the 35th African Cup of Nations in Morocco, Nigerian fans are allowed to dream big. Under Eric Chelle, the Super Eagles have dominated their group, blending tactical flexibility with attacking flair.

Despite missing key players like Benjamin Frederick and Ola Aina, and the retirement of skipper William Troost-Ekong, Nigeria has bounced back from a 2-1 friendly loss to Egypt to record wins over Tanzania, Tunisia, and Uganda. These victories put the team in prime position for a deep run in the tournament.

However, history warns caution. In AFCON 2021, a perfect group-stage record ended in a second-round exit against Tunisia. Recent tournaments show that winning early matches does not guarantee progression.

Tactically, Chelle has deployed a balanced team, combining a fluid midfield with a potent attacking line featuring Victor Osimhen, Ademola Lookman, and Akor Adams. Paul Onuachu has also made his mark with a first AFCON goal, showing the squad’s depth.

The upcoming match against Mozambique is crucial. Maintaining possession, deploying a midfield trio of Ndidi, Onyedika, and Iwobi, and giving attacking players freedom could yield multiple goals and finally secure a clean sheet.

With Chelle unbeaten in 90 minutes since taking charge, and the team peaking at the right moment, Nigeria’s pursuit of a fourth AFCON title is very much alive. Fans can hope that Morocco 2025 will be a tournament to remember.
