The Surveyor General of the Federation (SGOF), Surv. Abduganiyu Adeyemi Adebomehin, together with the Forum of States Surveyor General of Nigeria (FOSSGON), is spearheading reforms to ensure that land administration, GIS, and mapping are fully managed by professional surveyors, not non-technical personnel.
Key points:
- Federal–state synergy: State Surveyors General are being integrated into federal decision-making to strengthen land governance.
- Digital mapping initiatives: Abuja’s ongoing digital-twin mapping has mapped thousands of housing units, with plans to scale nationwide using aircraft technology. Training with Chinese experts has prepared OSGOF for this expansion.
- Professionalization: Survey offices are being encouraged to attain extra-ministerial status, while calls are renewed to restore the Surveyors Council of Nigeria (SURCON) for regulatory oversight and professional examinations.
- National impact: The reforms aim to improve infrastructure development, boundary management, and geospatial data integrity, ensuring Nigeria fully leverages the developmental and financial benefits of geospatial investment.
The movement underscores a push for surveyors to reclaim control of land administration, positioning professional expertise at the heart of Nigeria’s spatial planning and development strategy.
