The Take It Back (TIB) Movement, Jigawa State Chapter, has confirmed the release on bail of activist and scholar Abba Mu’azu Abiyos, following his recent detention in Dutse, Jigawa State.

In an official statement issued Monday and signed by Engr. Sani Aminu Taura, TIB Jigawa State Chapter Co-ordinator, the group said:

“We are pleased to announce that Abba Mu’azu Abiyos, a young and intelligent leader, has been released today on bail following his recent detention in Dutse, Jigawa State. While bail has been granted, the representative from the chairman has not yet arrived to facilitate the withdrawal of the case.”

The statement praised Abiyos’ academic and civic contributions, highlighting his commitment to both education and activism:

Ed. from Bayero University, Kano (BUK) and is currently pursuing his M.Sc., with examinations scheduled today, Monday, 17 November 2025. His commitment to both education and civic engagement is truly commendable.”

A Victory for Civic Freedoms

The TIB Movement described the development as an important step in upholding civil liberties and due process:

“This marks an important moment for justice, human rights, and the protection of civic freedoms in our country. We commend the authorities for taking the appropriate steps and call on all stakeholders to ensure that arbitrary arrests are prevented in the future.”

The group also praised Abiyos’ resilience and dedication:

“The courage, resilience, and dedication shown by Abba Abiyos in the face of adversity remain an inspiration to all who advocate for transparency, accountability, and the rights of citizens. We urge continued vigilance and support for those who stand for truth and justice. Together, we can build a society where the voice of every citizen is respected and protected.”

The ‘Wheelbarrow Empowerment’ Controversy

SaharaReporters gathered that Abiyos, a well-known civic activist in Roni, Jigawa State, disappeared shortly after posting photos on social media of a local government initiative he criticized.

The post, which went viral on X, showed beneficiaries smiling beside brand-new wheelbarrows loaded with yellow water jerrycans. The initiative, launched by the Roni Local Government Chairman, was reportedly meant to “empower youths and help them make ends meet” through small-scale water and goods vending.

However, the project has sparked widespread outrage, with many Nigerians describing it as “insensitive” and “ridiculous” amid the country’s worsening cost of living.

“BREAKING: Executive Chairman of Roni LGA in Jigawa State empowers his people with locally fabricated wheelbarrows and plenty of brand-new water cans,” read one viral social media post.

Friends and colleagues of Abiyos quickly raised the alarm when he could not be reached shortly after the post. His last online activity was over 24 hours ago.

“Where’s @AbbaM_Abiyos?? This is the question many of us are asking following the sudden disappearance of our brother, allegedly after he posted about the local government chairman empowering his people with a wheelbarrow,” wrote Yaya Abba, a close associate, on X.
