Taraba Residents Raise Fresh Alarm Over Armed Herdsmen’s Planned Attack, Killings in Chanchaji Communities

Residents of Chanchaji communities in Takum Local Government Area of southern Taraba State have raised fresh alarm over what they describe as an imminent large-scale attack by armed herders, following a series of deadly assaults and escalating threats in the region.

According to community members, tension has intensified across settlements surrounding Chanchaji after suspected armed herdsmen recently attacked and killed several villagers. Locals say the killings appear to be part of a broader pattern of intimidation and invasion that has sharply increased in recent weeks.

Speaking to SaharaReporters on Sunday, one resident—who requested anonymity for safety reasons—said villagers have been living in constant fear as armed men repeatedly target communities.

“As I write to you, my village now exists only in our memories. Our people have been displaced, killed, and scattered,” the resident said.

Another source noted that the attacks have continued despite growing international attention on insecurity in Nigeria.

“With the recent threats from U.S. President Trump, one would think these monsters would retreat, but instead we are seeing fresh, more brutal attacks,” he said. “Our people are dying helplessly, and the governor is more focused on his defection plans than the lives being wasted every day.”

The resident, who shared graphic images from the most recent attack, said such incidents occur “on a daily basis.”

He lamented that neither Governor Agbu Kefas nor federal and local representatives—including Hon. Ayuba Damper, the House of Representatives member for Ibi/Wukari Federal Constituency—have taken visible action to stop the killings.

“Our House of Reps member is silent, the senator is silent, the local government chairman is silent, and the governor is concerned about his defection,” he said. “People need to go back to their farms to look for food, and instead they are killed.”

The concerns follow a report by SaharaReporters on November 10, 2025, in which priests of the Catholic Diocese of Wukari and several community groups raised similar alarms over renewed deadly attacks allegedly carried out by armed herdsmen across southern Taraba.

According to the Diocese, victims of the attacks come from multiple communities under its jurisdiction. Church leaders have described the ongoing violence as a “coordinated campaign” targeting Christian farming populations.

Rev. Fr. John Laikel, Director of Social Communications for the diocese, described the situation as “devastating,” noting that many rural parishes have been abandoned after sustained assaults that claimed lives and destroyed entire villages.

Fr. Laikel alleged that attackers not only kill and burn homes but also graze their cattle on victims’ farmlands and, in some cases, occupy deserted settlements. He urged federal, state, and local authorities to “wake up to their constitutional responsibilities” of protecting lives and property, pointing out that some of the affected areas are located near military operational bases in Takum LGA.

As of the time of filing this report, no public statement or observable action has been issued by the Taraba State Government or the Nigeria Police regarding the escalating violence.
