Taylor Swift stunned fans with a sparkling new gold-and-black snakeskin catsuit during the Reputation set of her Miami Eras Tour stop, but the real reason behind the outfit change is now revealed. In the latest episode of her Disney+ docuseries The End of an Era, Swift and her longtime stylist, Joseph Cassell, share the behind-the-scenes story of the iconic costume swap.
From Red-and-Black to Gold-and-Black: The Miami Debut
Fans were initially surprised when Swift wore a new snakeskin catsuit during the Miami stop of her Eras Tour in October 2024. The outfit change sparked rumors that she might announce Reputation (Taylor’s Version), similar to how previous outfit swaps hinted at releases like Speak Now (Taylor’s Version) and 1989 (Taylor’s Version).
However, stylist Joseph Cassell revealed the truth: the new look wasn’t a cryptic announcement but a practical solution.
“The original catsuit was made from a different fabric. That was all the fabric there was in the world. So we had to recreate the fabric for the second one and for this one,” Cassell explained in episode 3 of The End of an Era.
The new one-leg ensemble featured intricate snakes with gold details replacing the red accents from the original design, giving it a fresh yet familiar look for fans who had seen Swift wear the red-and-black version during the first 131 shows of the tour.
Design Challenges: Fit and Function
Creating a new catsuit was not without its challenges. Swift’s highly physical stage performances—running across giant stadium stages, flying through the air for “Delicate,” and performing rapid choreography—required a perfectly fitted outfit.
“It’s just really annoying, and I have to do athletic s— in this,” Swift admitted, noting that the initial stitching and bust design made the catsuit impractical for her high-energy routines.
She added bluntly:
“I gotta see if this can even happen because they put my boob cups on my rib cage… It’s not that beautiful the way it fits me now.”
Cassell and the wardrobe team worked quickly to alter the outfit before the Miami performance. After final adjustments during a last-minute fitting at Hard Rock Stadium, Swift was thrilled with the result:
“It fits. It fits. It fits,” she said, beaming. “It’s perfect. Nothing is going to pop out.”
Cassell encouraged Swift, predicting fans’ reactions:
“People are going to lose their minds.”
And they certainly did.
The Role of Bodysuits in the Eras Tour
Throughout the Eras Tour, bodysuits have been a staple of Swift’s wardrobe, especially for her Reputation set. They combine glamour with the flexibility needed for intense stage performances. The Miami gold-and-black catsuit was part of a series of strategic wardrobe changes designed to keep each show visually dynamic while accommodating Swift’s physically demanding routines.
Swift had also debuted a new bodysuit during the Midnights set at the London stop on August 16, 2024, which had fueled speculation about future album announcements. However, Cassell confirmed that many of these changes are practical solutions driven by fabric availability, stage requirements, and fit considerations.
Behind the Glam: Taylor Swift’s Perfectionism
This glimpse behind the scenes highlights not just Swift’s iconic style but her commitment to precision and performance quality. Every detail—from fabric type to stitching placement—has to meet the demands of an energetic stadium show while maintaining her signature aesthetic.
The gold snakeskin catsuit serves as a reminder that touring isn’t just about music; it’s a careful choreography of fashion, stamina, and showmanship.
