The Tafawa Balewa Square (TBS) Management Board has reaffirmed its commitment to advancing tourism and safeguarding Nigeria’s cultural heritage following the completion of the restoration and beautification of the Independence Memorial Obelisk in Lagos.
Speaking at the unveiling of the newly restored monument, Managing Director of TBS, Mrs. Lucia Shittu, said the initiative was driven by feedback from visitors who expressed concern over the absence of the Nigerian flag at the historic site where the country gained independence in 1960.
“Tafawa Balewa Square is a powerful symbol of Nigeria’s independence and democracy. It is the spot where the Union Jack was lowered and the Nigerian flag was first hoisted. The obelisk, adorned with carvings of our pioneer leaders, stands as a testament to that moment. The square also hosts the annual memorial service honouring the sacrifices of our armed forces,” she explained.
Mrs. Shittu noted that the project aligns with the Federal Government’s broader development priorities.
“Under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, we prioritised the restoration of this site in line with Agenda 7 of the government’s 8-point agenda, which focuses on accelerating diversification through industrialisation, digitisation, creative arts, manufacturing, and innovation,” she said.
She also acknowledged Lafarge Africa for supporting the project as part of its corporate social responsibility drive.
Looking ahead, Shittu announced that with the first phase of the park’s development now completed, attention will shift to the redevelopment of the Remembrance Arcade, scheduled for completion in the first quarter of 2026.
Minister of Trade and Investment, Dr. Olajumoke Oduwole, reaffirmed the Presidency’s commitment to preserving national heritage as a means of strengthening social cohesion. She said the administration’s focus on heritage restoration reflects its broader dedication to national unity and stability.
“Today marks the beginning of a new chapter in Nigeria’s long and storied history. This moment is symbolic because it represents restoring what first united us as a nation,” Oduwole said.
