Team Europe has been officially named the BBC Sports Personality Team of the Year 2025, following a sensational and historic victory at the Ryder Cup. The team’s dramatic triumph on American soil captured the attention of the sporting world and marked one of the most memorable moments in European golf history.

Historic Ryder Cup Victory for Team Europe

Under the guidance of captain Luke Donald, Team Europe secured a thrilling 15-13 victory against the USA at the renowned Bethpage Black Golf Course in New York. This win represents Europe’s first Ryder Cup victory in the United States since 2012 and only the fifth away win in the tournament’s long-standing history, which dates back to 1927.

The European squad delivered a commanding performance throughout the competition, building an 11½-4½ lead heading into the final day—a record for the largest lead before the concluding round. While the American team launched a fierce comeback, narrowing the gap dramatically, Europe managed to hold their nerve and clinch a hard-fought win.

“This is an honour to be part of a team like this,” said Rory McIlroy, who accepted the award alongside teammate Tommy Fleetwood. McIlroy, who also won the BBC Sports Personality of the Year 2025, praised the captain, vice-captain, and backroom staff for their vital contributions to the team’s success.

Memorable Moments: “The Miracle at Medinah” Legacy

Europe’s victory has drawn comparisons to their famous win at Medinah in 2012, often referred to as the “Miracle at Medinah”. The team’s ability to withstand the pressure from a vociferous American crowd and defend their substantial lead highlighted their resilience, skill, and strategic brilliance.

This win underscores Europe’s dominance in the Ryder Cup, particularly in high-stakes situations away from home. Analysts noted that no team in history had overcome a seven-point deficit on the final day, making Europe’s performance all the more remarkable.

Recognition Against Stiff Competition

Team Europe beat strong contenders for the prestigious award, including England’s Euro 2025-winning women’s football team and the England Women’s Rugby World Cup champions. This achievement marks the seventh Ryder Cup team from Europe to win the BBC Sports Personality Team of the Year award, and the first since 2010.

The previous year’s award went to rugby league side Wigan Warriors after their historic quadruple victory in 2024.

Panel of Experts for BBC Sports Personality Awards

The selection panel for this year’s awards included some of the UK’s most notable sports figures, such as:

Team Europe’s Lasting Impact

Rory McIlroy’s dual recognition—winning Sports Personality of the Year 2025 and representing the winning team—cements his legacy as one of the sport’s most influential figures.

Europe’s Ryder Cup team has once again proven that strategic excellence, teamwork, and determination can achieve historic victories—even in the face of overwhelming odds.
