Terrorists Open Fire on Vehicles Along Kwara-Kogi Highway in Renewed Attacks

Terrorists have launched another attack on travellers along the Eruku–Egbe highway, a major route linking Kwara and Kogi States, in what residents described as a sustained wave of violence targeting motorists in the area.

Fresh Attack Near Eruku Community

According to reports, the latest assault occurred around 6 p.m. on Tuesday near the volatile Eruku community in Ekiti Local Government Area of Kwara State.

Eyewitnesses told SaharaReporters that the heavily armed attackers opened fire on vehicles plying the highway, forcing motorists to abandon their cars and flee into nearby bushes.

One traveller, who was driving from Ilorin, narrowly escaped death after bullets pierced through his car engine before he managed to drive to safety in Egbe town, located in Yagba West Local Government Area of Kogi State.

Series of Attacks Rock Kwara-Kogi Axis

The Tuesday assault is the latest in a series of violent incidents that have rocked the Eruku-Egbe corridor, an area that has become increasingly unsafe for travellers.

Earlier on Monday, SaharaReporters obtained footage showing multiple vehicles — including long trucks — parked along the roadside as terrified commuters ran for cover during a separate attack.

Eyewitnesses confirmed that bandits remained active in the area, warning travellers to avoid the highway until security agencies take firm control.

Related Attack in Kogi Leaves One Dead

Just 24 hours earlier, gunmen ambushed a commercial bus on the Ayere–Kabba road in the Ijumu Local Government Area of Kogi State, killing one passenger and injuring several others.

Sources said the attack happened around 5 p.m. on Sunday, when the assailants opened fire on vehicles along the busy route.

“One person was confirmed dead at the general hospital, while others are receiving treatment for gunshot injuries,” a witness told SaharaReporters.

Some vehicles reportedly managed to escape the ambush, but several passengers were hit by stray bullets.

Residents Decry Worsening Insecurity

Residents in both Kwara and Kogi States say the Ayere–Kabba and Eruku–Egbe axes have become high-risk zones, with frequent attacks by armed gangs believed to be operating between the two states.

Local sources have appealed for urgent security intervention to restore safety and prevent further loss of life along the key inter-state highway.
