The Weeknd Donates $350K to Jamaican Families Devastated by Hurricane Melissa

The Weeknd (Abel Tesfaye) has once again shown his commitment to humanitarian causes, donating $350,000 to help families in Jamaica affected by Hurricane Melissa. The announcement came via a press release on November 13, 2025, highlighting his continued support through the XO Humanitarian Fund.

Supporting Hurricane Relief Efforts in Jamaica

Hurricane Melissa, a powerful Category 5 storm, swept across the Caribbean at the end of October 2025, affecting nearly six million people and causing significant damage in Jamaica. The Weeknd’s generous contribution will go to the World Food Programme (WFP) to scale up emergency operations, aiming to assist up to 200,000 Jamaicans as they recover from the disaster.

“We are grateful to The Weeknd for his generous support for WFP’s urgent relief efforts. His compassion will provide much needed comfort and resilience to Jamaicans as they navigate this crisis,” said Barron Segar, President and CEO of World Food Program USA.

Segar emphasized that WFP relies heavily on private donors and global partners to respond effectively to humanitarian disasters like Hurricane Melissa.

A History of Philanthropy

This donation is just the latest in The Weeknd’s long-standing commitment to charitable causes. Since 2020, the Toronto-born singer has donated over $10 million to various humanitarian efforts worldwide. His contributions range from hurricane relief and food security initiatives to education and arts programs for underserved communities.

Honors and Giving Back to Toronto

Earlier this year, on July 26, 2025, The Weeknd was honored in his hometown of Toronto with the Key to the City and the declaration of “The Weeknd Weekend”. The private ceremony included youth from the Boys & Girls Club of West Scarborough and students from his alma mater, Birchmount Park Collegiate Institute.

Mayor Olivia Chow praised the multi-platinum artist, stating:

“Born in Toronto, Abel ‘The Weeknd’ Tesfaye represents the best of our city. From Scarborough to the global stage, he has reshaped modern R&B music as a multi-platinum, Diamond-certified artist while using his platform to create a lasting impact for Toronto and around the world.”

The Weeknd has used his platform to give back to the local community, planning projects such as revitalizing a basketball court, building a mobile recording studio for the Boys & Girls Club, and creating arts and sensory spaces for students with developmental disabilities.

“It feels good to be home. Toronto is where I found my voice, and I’m committed to helping the next generation find theirs,” The Weeknd said upon receiving the honor.
