Three Osun LG Workers Arrested for Alleged Theft; NLC Condemns Action

Three local government workers in Osun State were arrested on Monday for allegedly stealing council properties at their respective council secretariats. The arrests occurred in Boluwaduro and Egbedore local government areas following the resumption of work by staff after an extended strike.

According to Barrister Adegoke Ogunsola, Chairman of Irepodun Local Government, two workers were apprehended at the Boluwaduro council secretariat and one at Egbedore. The individuals allegedly forced open offices and attempted to take documents before being caught and handed over to the police for further action.

Speaking on behalf of ALGON Chairman Abiodun Idowu, Ogunsola confirmed the arrests and stated that the local governments had acted to protect council property.

However, Dr. Christopher Arapasopo, Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in Osun State, described the arrests as harassment of union members. He condemned the police for allegedly participating in the humiliation of workers and threatened legal and labour action if such practices continue.

“We have seen videos showing our members being forced to kneel. We condemn this conduct and call on the police to release them immediately. Labour will resist any attempts by politicians to create mayhem or destabilize the state,” Arapasopo said. He added that the government has historically supported labour, and such harassment is unacceptable.
