Timothée Chalamet Recalls Being Told He’d ‘Ruin’ His Career If He Wore Pink Jacket to First Film Premiere

Timothée Chalamet is no stranger to taking fashion risks, even when it means defying the advice of his team. In a recent December cover interview with Vogue, the 29-year-old Oscar-nominated actor reflected on a memorable moment at the start of his career when he was warned that a bold wardrobe choice could jeopardize his rising fame.

The Pink Jacket Controversy

The year was 2017, and Chalamet was preparing for the Berlin International Film Festival premiere of his breakthrough film, Call Me By Your Name. Inspired by French designer Haider Ackermann, Chalamet spotted the designer in a striking pink Berluti trench coat and knew immediately what he wanted to wear.

“I saw this big raincoat, and I was like, ‘Oh, boom. That’s what I’m wearing,’” Chalamet recalled.

However, his publicist strongly disagreed, warning,

“‘You’re not even going to get off the ground! You’re going to ruin what you’re doing before you get going.’”

Despite the pressure, Chalamet stayed true to his style, stating,

“I had to put the pink jacket on.”

The Iconic Berlin Film Festival Look

At the Berlin premiere, Chalamet paired the pink Berluti trench coat with a black suit, black sweater, and black leather boots, creating a look that has since become legendary in Hollywood fashion circles. His bold choice cemented his reputation as a risk-taking style icon, unafraid to push boundaries on the red carpet.

Chalamet later parted ways with the publicist, and he now works with a team that fully supports his creative decisions.

Fashion Friendships and Support

Chalamet has maintained a close relationship with Ackermann, who is now creative director for Tom Ford, calling him a “brother” on social media. Their friendship recently extended to helping Chalamet prepare for the 70th David Di Donatello Awards in Rome, where his girlfriend, Kylie Jenner, assisted him via FaceTime as Ackermann offered advice from afar.

“TEAMWORK – Miss K, you’re hired!!” Ackermann wrote on Instagram, showcasing the sweet behind-the-scenes moment.

The awards show marked the couple’s first red carpet appearance together since publicly being linked in April 2023.

Career, Fatherhood, and Work-Life Balance

In the same Vogue interview, Chalamet also spoke about his personal life, revealing that fatherhood “could be on the radar” in the future. He shared that the idea came after hearing a childless celebrity brag about the freedom afforded by not having kids, prompting him to reflect:

“Like, holy s—. Oh my God. [That’s] bleak.”

Chalamet also praised directors like Denis Villeneuve, who manage to balance family life with demanding careers, proving that success in Hollywood doesn’t require sacrificing personal life. He highlighted other peers, noting that Zendaya is engaged and Anya Taylor-Joy is married, emphasizing how life milestones influence his perspective on fatherhood and priorities.

A Fashion Icon Who Defies Expectations

Timothée Chalamet’s career and style choices demonstrate a fearless approach to both his work and public image. From his iconic pink jacket at Berlin to his ongoing collaborations with top designers, Chalamet continues to challenge traditional Hollywood fashion norms, inspiring fans and critics alike.
