Toke Makinwa Challenges the Notion of Women as “Gold Diggers”

Media personality Toke Makinwa has turned the tables on the commonly held belief that women are the primary gold diggers in relationships, asserting that men are, in fact, the biggest gold diggers. In a candid discussion during an episode of her podcast with fellow media figure Tacha, Makinwa openly critiqued the societal tendency to stigmatize women who marry wealthy men, while men who do the same often escape similar scrutiny.

Breaking Stereotypes: The “Gold Digger” Narrative

Makinwa emphasized that women are frequently criticized for seeking financial stability or marrying into wealth. Yet, she pointed out that the same judgment does not extend to men who deliberately seek out women from affluent backgrounds. According to Makinwa, men marry generational wealth without facing shame or harsh judgment.

“People are constantly insulting women for knowing what they want. You sit with all these podcasts as men, or you air your thoughts as some men and say women are dating men for money. Women are doing this. Men are the biggest gold diggers in the world. They marry generational wealth, and they do it without shame,” Makinwa said.

Marriage and Financial Considerations: A Two-Way Street

While Makinwa made it clear that she was not vilifying men who strategically marry for financial security, she reiterated that financial considerations in marriage have always existed on both sides. Marriage, historically, has always been about more than just love—it has also been about securing financial stability, social standing, and sometimes generational wealth.

Makinwa also went on to share a personal perspective on the matter. “And I don’t hate them. If my brother comes to me with two ladies and asks which one to marry, I will advise him to marry the one from a good financial background,” she said, acknowledging that the financial aspect of relationships is a pragmatic consideration, not just a gendered one.

Challenging Double Standards

By flipping the script, Makinwa aims to challenge the double standard where women are harshly criticized for seeking out wealth in relationships, while men are often celebrated or ignored for making similar choices. Her comments add to an ongoing conversation about societal expectations, financial independence, and the evolving dynamics of modern relationships.

In her view, the issue is not about condemning financial considerations in relationships but rather understanding that both men and women, in their own ways, often seek partners who can provide more than just love and companionship.
