Abu Dhabi is once again set to host one of the most anticipated mixed martial arts events of the year — UFC 321, featuring a thrilling heavyweight title clash between Tom Aspinall and Ciryl Gane. The championship doubleheader, taking place at Etihad Arena on Saturday, marks Aspinall’s first defense of his UFC Heavyweight Championship, and the stakes couldn’t be higher.
Aspinall’s Journey to the Heavyweight Throne
Tom Aspinall (15-3 MMA), the British powerhouse from Salford, England, has risen rapidly through the ranks of the UFC heavyweight division. Earlier this year, Aspinall was promoted to undisputed heavyweight champion following Jon Jones’ abrupt retirement. Jones (28-1, 1 NC MMA) had been expected to face Aspinall before negotiations fell apart and subsequent legal issues delayed his career.
Now, Aspinall steps into the octagon for the first time as champion, determined to prove that his title reign is no accident. Speaking at the pre-fight press conference, the 31-year-old Brit emphasized that he is blocking out the noise and focusing entirely on his performance.
“I am happy to let the fight play out completely organically,” Aspinall told reporters. “Whatever opportunities come my way, I’ll take them. My goal is to get the finish and continue building my legacy.”
Aspinall’s quick footwork, technical boxing, and versatile grappling have made him one of the most complete heavyweights in recent memory — a blend of speed and power rarely seen in the division.
Ciryl Gane’s Last Shot at UFC Heavyweight Gold
Across the octagon stands Ciryl Gane (13-2 MMA), the former interim UFC heavyweight champion from France. This bout marks his third attempt at capturing the undisputed title after previous losses to Jon Jones at UFC 285 and Francis Ngannou (18-3 MMA) at UFC 270.
At 35 years old, Gane understands that time may be running out to make history. Calm and composed as always, the French striker acknowledged the magnitude of the challenge before him.
“Everybody knows Tom Aspinall’s strengths,” Gane said. “But everyone also knows mine. We’ll see this Saturday who can impose their game plan.”
Renowned for his technical striking, movement, and fight IQ, Gane remains one of the most skilled and elusive fighters in the heavyweight class. His ability to control range and tempo could be key against Aspinall’s aggression and ground game.
Co-Main Event: Jandiroba vs. Dern II for the Vacant Strawweight Title
The co-main event of UFC 321 will feature an all-Brazilian showdown between Virna Jandiroba (22-3 MMA) and Mackenzie Dern (15-5 MMA) for the vacant UFC strawweight title. This rematch comes nearly five years after their first encounter in 2020, which saw Dern earn a unanimous decision victory.
With both fighters evolving since then, the stakes are far higher now. Dern, known for her world-class Brazilian jiu-jitsu, enters the fight determined to capture her first UFC championship belt.
“It’s possible for me to beat her because I’ve done it before,” Dern said. “We’re different fighters now, but that experience showed me what I’m capable of.”
Meanwhile, Jandiroba, also a black belt and former Invicta FC champion, views this fight as a long-awaited opportunity for redemption.
“It’s a rematch I’ve wanted for a long time,” she said. “To avenge that loss in a title fight is the perfect scenario. It’s the cherry on the cake.”

A Clash of Styles and Legacies
Saturday’s heavyweight main event is being billed as a technical masterclass — Aspinall’s explosive athleticism and wrestling versus Gane’s elite striking and movement. Many fans see this as the beginning of a new era for the heavyweight division following the retirements and absences of Jon Jones and Ngannou.
Both fighters enter UFC 321 with something to prove: Aspinall wants to legitimize his reign as champion, while Gane seeks redemption and perhaps his last chance at UFC gold.
“This fight isn’t just about the belt,” Aspinall said. “It’s about legacy — proving I belong at the very top.”
With a stacked card, two title fights, and the global MMA spotlight shining on Abu Dhabi, UFC 321 promises to deliver fireworks from start to finish.
