As the festive season draws near, Plymouth in South West England is set to come alive with the magic of Christmas through a Carol and Cultural Evening organized by Toskel Community Heritage & Culture CIC. Scheduled for December 21, the event promises an unforgettable celebration of music, dance, and Nigerian culture, bringing together people from diverse backgrounds to immerse in the holiday spirit.
Founders Kelvin and Oluwatosin Adekanmbi, also behind Toskel Travels Limited, are committed to preserving Nigeria’s cultural heritage while fostering community cohesion in the UK. Over the years, the duo has organized events such as Nigerian Cultural Day and Independence Day celebrations, along with language classes, storytelling sessions, and creative workshops for the diaspora.
“These events don’t just entertain; they build bridges, preserve traditions, and strengthen the Nigerian spirit. Our goal is to showcase and celebrate Nigerian heritage—our traditions, languages, food, and dress—while creating a thriving, united community,” Kelvin said.
The upcoming Christmas Carol and Cultural Evening will feature local choirs, musicians, and dancers performing traditional carols and folk songs, while also welcoming the broader African diaspora and local communities in South West England to experience Nigerian culture firsthand.
Oluwatosin Adekanmbi explained the motivation behind their initiatives:
“We want Nigerians in the diaspora to stay connected to their roots and ensure their children grow up knowing the colours, rhythms, and values of their heritage. Plymouth is a diverse city, but there weren’t enough platforms showcasing Nigerian culture. That inspired us to start Toskel Travels Limited and Toskel Community Heritage & Culture CIC.”
The initiatives have grown from small gatherings into impactful community events, featuring exhibitions of Nigerian crafts, food, and cultural performances. Through the Nigerians in Plymouth Enterprise Network (NIPEN), the couple has also supported local Nigerians in registering businesses, empowering families and young entrepreneurs to turn their ideas into sustainable ventures.
Their dedication has garnered recognition from Plymouth City Council, which actively supports the annual Nigerian Cultural Day. The most recent edition was attended by over 15 notable Nigerian celebrities and key community figures. Highlights included awards presented by Mayor Kathy Watkins and former Lord Mayor Dr. John Mahogany to outstanding personalities contributing to culture and unity, including journalist Richard Edoki, filmmaker Kunle Afod, and others.
“The Toskel Christmas Carol and Cultural Evening is about community, celebration, and connection. We aim to bring joy while preserving and sharing our rich heritage with everyone in Plymouth and beyond,” Kelvin concluded.
