Tottenham Captain Cristian Romero Criticises Club Hierarchy Amid Poor Form

Cristian Romero Critiques Tottenham Hierarchy Following Run of Poor Results

Tottenham Hotspur captain Cristian Romero appeared to call out the club’s leadership following a frustrating period for the North London side. The Argentina international initially posted a critical message on Instagram suggesting that senior figures at Spurs only “show up when things are going well” and telling “a few lies”. The post was later edited to remove the explicit mention of lies but retained an overall critique of the club’s hierarchy.

The 27-year-old defender made the remarks in the aftermath of Tottenham’s 3-2 defeat at Bournemouth, which left Spurs 14th in the Premier League, having won just one of their past six league matches.

“Apologies to all fans who follow us everywhere, who are always there and will continue to be,” Romero wrote in the edited post. “We are responsible, there’s no doubt about that. But we will keep facing up to it and trying to turn the situation around, for ourselves and for the club. At times like this, it should be other people coming out to speak, but they don’t – as has been happening for several years now. They only show up when things are going well. We’ll stay here, working, sticking together and giving our all to turn things around.”

Fans Express Frustration

Tottenham supporters have voiced their frustration with the team and manager Thomas Frank in recent weeks. Fans chanted “boring, boring Tottenham” during a goalless draw at Brentford and booed the squad following a 1-1 draw against Sunderland.

Tensions spilled over during the Bournemouth defeat, with players Micky van de Ven and Palhinha exchanging words with fans, while Pedro Porro required intervention from goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario to prevent an altercation. Additionally, Frank faced criticism for being photographed holding a coffee cup branded with Arsenal’s logo before kickoff, adding to the negative spotlight on Spurs.

Romero’s Previous Criticisms

This is not the first time Romero, who has made 146 appearances for Tottenham, has publicly criticised the club. In June 2025, he posted on Instagram about “the many obstacles that always existed and always will exist” while paying tribute to sacked manager Ange Postecoglou. In December 2024, he also voiced concerns over a lack of board investment in the squad.

Romero’s statements reflect growing tensions within Spurs during a season where the team’s form has failed to meet expectations, highlighting potential internal challenges between players, management, and leadership.

What This Means for Tottenham

With Spurs struggling for consistency in the Premier League, Romero’s comments could add pressure on manager Thomas Frank and the board to address concerns raised by both players and supporters. Tottenham now face a critical period to turn around their form and rebuild confidence among fans.
