Nigerian fashion designer Toyin Lawani has publicly criticized Euracare Multispecialist Hospital in Victoria Island, Lagos, alleging severe medical negligence during her spinal surgery.
In a detailed Instagram post, Lawani stated she spent nearly ₦100 million on the procedure, which led to multiple life-threatening complications. She revealed:
“Still suffering the consequences from Euracare right now… Till today I still can’t speak well or walk well. They destroyed my vocal cords. I had complications, started bleeding in my lungs, and had to be reoperated.”
Lawani recounted how her heart briefly stopped during surgery, requiring urgent intervention by her family and friends. After being discharged with limited mobility, she sought treatment in the UK, where further surgeries were performed to remove lung infections and tracheotomy tubes.
She described the experience as trauma-inducing and life-changing, warning Nigerians to carefully consider local medical care:
“If you have health issues in Nigeria, even if you have your money, just think carefully before going there.”
Lawani’s allegations come amid Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s legal complaint against Euracare following the death of her 21-month-old son, Nnamdi, which has prompted a Lagos State Government investigation into the hospital’s practices.
