In a move to protect farmers and ensure food security during the peak harvest season, troops of Operation Whirl Stroke (OPWS) have arrested two herders found trespassing and damaging crops on community farmland in Makurdi.
Lieutenant Ahmad Zubairu, spokesperson for OPWS, confirmed the arrest, saying the incident occurred on 20 November 2025 during a routine patrol at Zongo Akiki.
“The troops intercepted the herders after they drove their cattle into cultivated farmlands, causing damage to crops,” Zubairu said. “The swift intervention prevented further destruction and potential clashes between the herders and local farmers.”
The suspects are currently in custody as investigations continue and appropriate legal action is taken.
Major General Moses Gara, Force Commander of Operation Whirl Stroke, commended the troops for their professionalism and urged the public to avoid taking the law into their own hands during disputes.
“Violence or reprisal attacks only escalate tensions and undermine peaceful co-existence,” Major General Gara said. He also called on herders to abide by the law and refrain from criminal actions that threaten community safety.
The Force Commander reaffirmed OPWS’s commitment to protecting farmlands and ensuring a safe environment for all legitimate economic activities.
