Troops of Operation HADIN KAI successfully foiled coordinated terrorist attacks in Adamawa and Borno states, neutralizing several insurgents during follow-up operations, the military confirmed.
In a statement on Friday, Lieutenant S. A. Atokolo, Acting Media Information Officer of the Joint Task Force (North East), said the attacks occurred in the early hours of January 16, 2026.
In Adamawa State, terrorists targeted a patrol base at Sabon Gari, Madagali Local Government Area. Troops, reinforced by the Gulak unit and a Battalion Quick Reaction Force, engaged the attackers and forced them to retreat. No casualties were reported among the troops. The area was subsequently cleared and scanned for improvised explosive devices and booby traps to ensure safety.
Meanwhile, in Borno State, insurgents launched a large-scale, multi-directional assault on the Forward Operating Base at Azir. Despite attempts to breach the defensive perimeter, troops, supported by aerial units of Operation HADIN KAI, repelled the attackers after a firefight lasting over an hour.
Rocket-propelled grenades fired by the terrorists damaged troop-carrying vehicles and partially gutted the base’s CCTV control room, but control of the base was maintained. Several weapons and ammunition were recovered, including a 60mm mortar tube, mortar bombs, heavy machine gun rounds, locally fabricated explosives, and large quantities of 7.62mm NATO ammunition.
Follow-up Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance operations tracked fleeing insurgents, enabling air strikes along their withdrawal routes, which neutralized additional terrorists.
Operation HADIN KAI continues to conduct operations aimed at degrading terrorist networks and preventing further attacks in Nigeria’s North East.
