Bhubaneswar, November 1, 2025: A harrowing case of sexual violence has emerged from Odisha’s Subarnapur district, where three masked men allegedly abducted and gang-raped a young woman working at a private showroom in Birmaharajpur. Two suspects have been detained by police, while efforts are ongoing to apprehend the third accused.

According to the complaint, the victim was returning home from work on Friday night when the three men intercepted her. Eyewitness accounts and statements in the FIR allege that the assailants sprayed an unknown substance on her face, rendering her incapacitated, and then forcibly took her to an isolated area behind the Industrial Training Institute (ITI) in Bhubaneswar. There, she was gang-raped before the men fled, leaving her unconscious.

After regaining consciousness, the woman returned home and informed her parents, who immediately lodged a complaint with the police. Birmaharajpur Sub-Divisional Officer (SDO) Hemant Rao confirmed that forensic and evidentiary procedures are underway, stating, “A team is collecting evidence and we are doing our best to ensure justice.”

Last week, two girls in Mayurbhanj district were allegedly gang-raped while returning from watching an opera show.

The 2023 NCRB report, released in September, indicated that the state’s conviction rate for crimes against women stood at a dismal 6.9%, far below the national average of 21.3%, and showing a decline from 9.2% in 2022. Out of 9,774 cases reported in 2023, only 670 ended in convictions, while 9,104 cases resulted in acquittals, reflecting serious gaps in the legal and judicial process.

The FIR filed following this latest incident cites the names and descriptions of the suspects where available, and law enforcement agencies are conducting extensive investigations, including gathering evidence from the crime scene, collecting witness statements, and reviewing CCTV footage in the vicinity.
