Two migrants have died after a small boat struck a rocky shoreline on the eastern Greek island of Chios, the country’s coast guard said on Friday.

The incident occurred late Thursday night, when the vessel, carrying dozens of people, collided with rocks as it approached the island. Fire service crews rescued five people from the scene, including two found unconscious, authorities said.

A search of the surrounding area later located 24 additional survivors on land.

According to officials, 12 migrants were transported by ambulance to Chios General Hospital, where two women were later pronounced dead. The 17 remaining survivors were taken to the Chios Reception and Identification Center for registration and medical checks.
