Two More Rivers Lawmakers Urge Assembly to Drop Impeachment Move Against Governor Fubara

Two additional members of the Rivers State House of Assembly have urged their colleagues to halt the impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and Deputy Governor Ngozi Odu. The appeal was made by Barile Nwakoh (Khana Constituency I) and Emilia Amadi (Obio/Akpor Constituency II) amid rising political tension in the state legislature.

Their intervention follows a similar call two days earlier by Minority Leader Sylvanus Enyi Nwankwo (Omuma State Constituency) and Hon. Peter Abi (Degema State Constituency). With these latest developments, four of the 26 lawmakers who initially supported the impeachment notice have withdrawn their backing, signaling growing support for dialogue over confrontation.

In a press briefing in Port Harcourt, the lawmakers warned against actions that could further destabilize the state. They called on their colleagues to balance justice with mercy and explore amicable solutions to the crisis.

“Having listened to numerous appeals from elders and leaders within and outside the state, we are calling on our colleagues to reconsider the impeachment process and seek a peaceful resolution, even though the Governor and Deputy Governor may have infringed on the Constitution,” the lawmakers stated.

The move reflects a rising push within the Assembly to prioritize negotiation and compromise over formal impeachment proceedings, aiming to maintain political stability in Rivers State.
