Two Rivers Lawmakers Withdraw From Governor Fubara’s Impeachment, Call for Peaceful Resolution

Two members of the Rivers State House of Assembly have withdrawn their support for the ongoing impeachment process against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Professor Ngozi Odu, urging fellow lawmakers to pursue a political and peaceful resolution instead.

The lawmakers — Hon. Sylvanus Enyi Nwankwo, representing Omuma State Constituency and Minority Leader of the Assembly, and Hon. Peter Abi of Degema State Constituency — made their position known in a video released on Monday.

Speaking during a press briefing, the legislators appealed to members of the House to temper justice with mercy and explore an amicable solution to the crisis currently rocking the state legislature.

Addressing the impeachment notice already issued against the governor and his deputy, the lawmakers said the briefing was convened to formally call on their colleagues to reconsider the move.

They revealed that appeals from elders and political leaders within and outside Rivers State influenced their decision to step back from the impeachment process.

According to them, while the governor and his deputy may have committed constitutional infractions, the situation requires restraint and dialogue rather than irreversible political action.

The lawmakers stressed that continued pressure from respected leaders prompted them to advocate for reconciliation, warning against actions that could further deepen political divisions in the state.

They, however, emphasized that Governor Fubara also has a responsibility to ensure strict adherence to constitutional provisions going forward, noting that peace can only be achieved if all parties play their roles.

The intervention comes amid rising political tension in Rivers State, as the impeachment proceedings continue to generate controversy and expose divisions within the House of Assembly.
