Two military officers are reportedly on the run after being named among those allegedly involved in a plot to terminate Nigeria’s democracy, TheCable understands.
Military authorities have continued to make arrests following the preliminary interrogation of 16 suspects seized in the first week of October over the alleged botched coup plot.
Sources revealed that while 18 officers were initially targeted for arrest, two managed to flee and are now believed to be outside the country.
JM Ganaks, a major with service number N/14363 from the Federal Capital Territory, is currently at large. He was part of the Regular Course 58 of the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA), with his station listed as Jaji, Kaduna State.
Also on the run is G Binuga, a captain with service number N/167722 from Taraba State. He was a member of the Regular Course 64 and stationed at DHQ SOF Bida, Niger State.
Ongoing Arrests and Investigations
Some of the arrested officers have provided “useful statements” to the authorities, leading to further detentions. Sources estimate that over 30 officers are now in custody. While some remain silent, many are reportedly cooperating with the investigation.
Contrary to widespread speculation, the coup was not planned for October 1, as arrests only began in the first week of the month.
The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has not officially confirmed the coup plot. It stated that the ongoing investigation of the 16 officers is a “routine internal process aimed at ensuring discipline and professionalism is maintained within the ranks.”
