Two Suspects Arrested for Supplying Food and Supplies to Armed Groups Behind Anambra Killings and Kidnappings

The Anambra State Police Command has arrested two suspects involved in providing essential supplies to armed groups linked to secessionist activities in the state. The arrest, which took place on December 11, 2025, comes amid rising concerns over violence and criminal activities in parts of Anambra, especially during the Christmas season.

Details of the Arrest

According to a statement from the police, a joint security operation, led by officers from the Rapid Response Squad, Awkuzu, and Agunechemba Unit, was conducted based on credible intelligence. The suspects, Mmadubuchi Ike (28) and Chinonso Izunobi (34), were apprehended at a hideout near the Orsumoghu and Aguluezechukwu areas of the state.

The police allege that Ike and Izunobi were responsible for supplying food items and other logistical support to a criminal camp associated with secessionist groups. These groups are believed to be behind the killings, kidnappings, and other violent activities in the region.

Recovered Weapons and Evidence

In addition to the arrests, security operatives recovered several firearms during the operation, including:

  • One Type-06 rifle with 10 live rounds
  • Two pump-action guns
  • 20 live cartridges

Preliminary interrogations reportedly linked the suspects to several serious crimes, including the murder of a youth leader, Biggy, in the Ukpor area, as well as multiple kidnapping incidents across Anambra.

Recent Escalation in Violence

Anambra has witnessed a surge in violence linked to secessionist armed groups, particularly in the Ihiala, Nnewi South, and Aguata regions. These groups have allegedly increased their attacks, with recent incidents including:

  • The kidnapping of civilians
  • The targeted killing of an Anglican cleric’s wife during an attack on a church in the Lilu community
  • Roadblocks set up by criminal gangs, making travel dangerous

Residents have expressed growing concerns over the safety of their communities, especially during evening hours when criminal groups are said to operate more freely. This has raised alarm, particularly among motorists and travelers who face increasing threats from roadblock activities by armed gangs.

Police Response and Future Operations

In response to the rising violence, Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, reaffirmed the police command’s commitment to tackling these criminal groups. He also promised that the intensive investigation would continue to identify and apprehend other members of the syndicate who are currently at large.

The police also appealed to the public to continue providing vital information to help with the ongoing security operations. The force emphasized that their goal is to ensure peace and security throughout the state, particularly as the festive season approaches.

Continued Security Efforts

The police statement concluded by urging residents to stay vigilant and support the law enforcement agencies in ensuring the safety of all communities across Anambra. The police also promised to keep up the pressure on armed groups, particularly those involved in criminal activities tied to the ongoing secessionist unrest.

With the Christmas season fast approaching, authorities are keen to prevent further violence and restore calm in Anambra to ensure that the public can celebrate the holiday in safety.
