The Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE), in partnership with the Diamond Awards for Media Excellence (DAME) and UNICEF, will host a one-day symposium on Tuesday at the Lagos Sheraton Hotel, Ikeja.
The event will convene media leaders, policymakers, and child-rights advocates to assess Nigeria’s preparedness in securing the future of its children. Themed “Equipping the Nigerian Child for the Future: How Prepared Are We?”, the symposium comes amid growing concerns over child welfare in Nigeria, including risks related to education, nutrition, health, safety, and climate emergencies.
Recent incidents such as attacks on schools, rising malnutrition, and displacement from conflicts and floods have highlighted the urgent need to improve child protection systems, access to quality education, and health services.
Participants at the symposium are expected to explore practical solutions to enhance safe learning environments, child welfare systems, climate resilience, and ethical, child-focused media reporting.
UNICEF representatives emphasized that children continue to suffer disproportionately from insecurity and poverty, despite being the least responsible for the crises. The organisers hope the dialogue will foster stronger partnerships, promote evidence-based policymaking, and reinforce national commitment to ensuring every Nigerian child has the opportunity to thrive.
