UNILAG bans skitmaking, content creation on campus

The University of Lagos (UNILAG), Akoka, has officially prohibited unauthorized filming and content creation on its campus, including hostels and other facilities, following a growing trend of students and content creators using university spaces without approval.

In a statement released on Thursday, October 24, 2025, and signed by the Head of Communication, Adejoke Alaga-Ibraheem, the university expressed concern over the unregulated use of its premises for video productions, skits, movies, and other creative content.

“The attention of the University of Lagos Management has been drawn to the increasing use of the University premises, including hostels and other facilities, for shooting of films/videos (skits, vox pop, etc.) and cinematographic activities, without appropriate authorisation,” the statement read.

Purpose of the Directive

UNILAG emphasized that the policy is intended to:

  • Protect the academic environment from disruption.
  • Preserve the university’s image and prevent misrepresentation in unregulated productions.
  • Ensure safety and decorum within academic and residential spaces.

The university clarified that all members of the university community—students, staff, and external collaborators—must obtain official approval from the Communications Unit before filming on campus. This ensures that content production adheres to university guidelines, security protocols, and community standards.

Encouraging Responsible Creativity

While UNILAG encourages creativity and the responsible use of digital media, the statement made it clear that all content activities must strictly follow the university’s procedures. Members of the university and the public are urged to comply fully with this directive in the interest of order, safety, and collective responsibility.

Context

The move comes amid the rise of universities as popular backdrops for social commentary, comedy skits, and online content. UNILAG has been a notable breeding ground for some of Nigeria’s most famous skitmakers, including:

  • Muhammed Gilmore, BSc Chemistry, January 2024 graduate
  • Chukwuebuka Emmanuel Amuzie (Brain Jotter), who graduated in 2024

By enforcing this regulation, UNILAG aims to balance creative expression with academic integrity, ensuring that its campus remains a safe, orderly, and respected environment for learning and living.
