Jhansi, Uttar Pradesh: A local MP-MLA court in Jhansi on Saturday granted police eight hours of conditional custody of former Samajwadi Party legislator Deep Narayan Yadav in connection with a criminal extortion case, officials confirmed. The limited remand has been scheduled for Monday and is intended to facilitate the recovery of funds allegedly linked to the matter.
According to police sources, the case stems from a complaint lodged by Prem Singh Paliwal, a resident of Bhujoud village, who accused Yadav and his associates of assault, extortion, and attempted land grab. Paliwal alleged that on November 2, 2025, Yadav, along with two accomplices, assaulted him, looted valuables, and pressured him to transfer a piece of land adjoining a school under their control. The complaint also included claims of extortion, specifying a sum of ₹32,000.
Following the complaint, the Moth police registered a First Information Report (FIR) against Yadav and the two others involved. One of the associates, Ashok Goswami, has since been granted bail, while the other, Anil Yadav, remains in police custody. As part of the ongoing investigation, police have recovered ₹8,000 from Goswami and ₹5,000 from Anil Yadav. The remaining ₹19,000, alleged to have been extorted, is now the focus of the forthcoming remand.
Additional District Government Counsel Rajendra Rawat explained that the court, after hearing the matter, approved the eight-hour conditional remand to allow police to visit Yadav’s native village of Budhavali for the recovery of the remaining amount. The short-duration remand reflects the court’s precautionary measures while facilitating law enforcement’s efforts to complete the financial recovery.
Yadav, who surrendered before the court on December 18, 2025, has been in judicial custody since that time. The case has drawn attention not only because of the criminal allegations but also due to Yadav’s political profile as a former legislator with substantial influence in the region.
Authorities also noted that in December 2024, acting under the Gangsters Act, the district administration had attached movable and immovable properties worth over ₹20 crore belonging to Yadav. These properties, located across the Bhagwantpura, Karguwan Ji, and Bangua areas of Jhansi district, were seized following orders of the district magistrate’s court. The action was part of a broader attempt to curb alleged criminal activities and recover illegally obtained assets linked to the accused.
The case exemplifies ongoing law enforcement efforts to hold influential political figures accountable in Uttar Pradesh. Officials emphasized that conditional remands, such as the one granted to Yadav, are routinely used to recover evidence or assets that are otherwise difficult to obtain from individuals under judicial custody.
The police investigation remains active, with authorities closely monitoring developments and coordinating with local administrative offices to ensure the recovery of the extorted amount. As the eight-hour remand approaches, law enforcement personnel are expected to deploy teams to Yadav’s native village, using the opportunity to question him further and finalize recovery measures.
This development adds to a series of high-profile legal proceedings in Uttar Pradesh involving political leaders accused of criminal activities, reflecting an increased emphasis by the state administration on accountability and enforcement of anti-extortion laws.
