Lucknow – In response to the ongoing severe cold wave and dense fog affecting large parts of Uttar Pradesh, the state government has implemented a comprehensive relief plan to ensure the safety and well-being of its residents. Authorities have activated night shelters, bonfires, and blanket distribution programs across all districts, aiming to prevent hardship among the public during the extreme winter conditions.
According to an official statement, the government has issued strict instructions to district administrations, municipal bodies, and relevant departments to provide relief with sensitivity and urgency. “No needy person should suffer during the cold wave,” the statement emphasized, underlining the government’s commitment to safeguarding vulnerable populations.
Currently, 1,247 night shelters have been set up across the state, accommodating 9,949 people so far. The state has directed district administrations to ensure that these facilities are well-maintained, with proper arrangements for cleanliness, lighting, hot water, and security. The shelters are also equipped with bonfires at key locations to help residents combat the severe cold.
A major focus of the relief effort is the distribution of blankets to protect people from freezing temperatures. Over the past three years, the government has procured an average of 10,65,889 blankets annually, spending roughly ₹44.38 crore. Under the current winter relief program, an amount of ₹17.55 crore has been released to districts for blanket purchases, and 3,78,884 blankets have already been supplied. Of these, 1,40,364 blankets have been distributed to those in need, while the remaining blankets are in the process of being allocated.
In addition to shelter and blankets, bonfire arrangements have been organized at public locations across districts. A total of ₹1.75 crore has been allocated for this purpose, and the status of bonfires is being monitored daily via the government’s relief portal, ensuring systematic oversight and timely interventions where required.
The Uttar Pradesh government is also leveraging technology to minimize accidents and health risks caused by dense fog. The Relief Commissioner’s office has sent 33.27 crore alert SMS messages through the Sachet app and web portal to officials and the general public in affected areas. In parallel, departments such as UPIDA, NHAI, and PWD are issuing regular fog-related advisories to district magistrates and local police via email, helping maintain public safety and smooth management of traffic and road conditions.
These measures reflect the state’s proactive approach to disaster management and winter preparedness. By combining physical relief infrastructure with technological monitoring and communication, the UP government aims to reduce cold-related risks, provide immediate assistance to vulnerable citizens, and maintain public order during extreme winter conditions.
