Lucknow, October 14, 2025: The National Statistical Commission (NSC) on Tuesday assured the Uttar Pradesh government of implementing amendments to the methodology for calculating the Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP) by February 2026, aiming for a more accurate representation of under-represented sectors.
The decision follows discussions between NSC officials and Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, focusing on improving statistical accuracy and ensuring that sectors traditionally under-represented in economic calculations are better reflected.
Background
The UP government, targeting a $1 trillion economy by 2029-2030, had requested a revision of the GSDP methodology. According to the state, the GSDP stood at ₹29.6 lakh crore at the end of 2024-25. Officials estimate it could rise to around ₹32 lakh crore if sectors like health, education, trade, and unorganised industries are more accurately accounted for.
“This change in methodology will allow for better representation of various under-represented areas, ensuring the GSDP reflects the true economic potential of Uttar Pradesh,” said Alok Kumar III, Principal Secretary (Planning).
NSC-UPS Discussions
The NSC team, including Chairman Rajeeva Laxman Karandikar, members A Ganesh Kumar, Asit Kumar Sadhu, and Member Secretary Saurabh Garg, visited Lucknow for a daylong discussion with UP officials.
The commission commended the state government’s initiatives, including the CM Dashboard, women’s economic empowerment programs, and the district domestic product calculations. NSC officials emphasized the importance of coordination between central and state-level statistical methodologies and assured cooperation in areas such as price statistics, survey design, and technical statistical work.
Chief Minister’s Statement
CM Yogi Adityanath highlighted the need for reliable data on agriculture, industry, health, and education sectors to support policymaking and economic planning. He expressed optimism about enhanced cooperation with the NSC to strengthen statistical frameworks and achieve the state’s ambitious GSDP growth targets.
