Volkswagen Reports Resumption of Nexperia Chip Deliveries
Volkswagen has confirmed that deliveries of Nexperia chips have resumed to the automotive industry after a period of significant supply disruption. According to Ralf Brandstaetter, Volkswagen’s board member for China, the initial shipments have already reached manufacturers, providing critical relief to the global automotive supply chain.
The resumption of chip deliveries follows a period of heightened uncertainty after the Dutch government seized control of Nexperia on September 30, 2025, as part of broader concerns linked to the U.S.-China trade tensions.
Background: Nexperia Supply Disruption
Nexperia, a Netherlands-based semiconductor manufacturer owned by Chinese company Wingtech, produces essential chips used in automotive electronics and other electronic devices. Following the Dutch government’s seizure, the Chinese government blocked exports of Nexperia chips starting October 4, 2025, leading to widespread concern among automakers over potential production slowdowns.
The supply outage affected multiple automakers worldwide, prompting urgent negotiations to restore chip deliveries and stabilize production lines.
U.S.-China Trade Agreement and Chinese Export Exemptions
The recent resumption of shipments is linked to a U.S.-China agreement, under which Nexperia will not face U.S. export restrictions for one year. Additionally, China has agreed to allow exports of Nexperia chips on a case-by-case basis, signaling a significant de-escalation in the semiconductor dispute.
Brandstaetter noted:
“After the agreement with the United States, the Chinese Ministry of Commerce reacted quickly and announced that it would grant short-term special permits.”
He also emphasized that the sustainability of this system will largely depend on the broader dynamics of U.S.-China relations. While Volkswagen’s production in China is currently unaffected, ongoing geopolitical tensions continue to introduce uncertainty into the supply chain.
Implications for Volkswagen and the Global Auto Industry
The resumption of Nexperia chip deliveries is expected to stabilize production schedules for Volkswagen and other affected automakers. However, the situation highlights the fragility of the global automotive semiconductor supply chain, where geopolitical disputes can quickly impact production lines.
Analysts suggest that while the immediate supply crisis has been alleviated, manufacturers must continue to monitor developments in the U.S.-China trade relationship and potential future disruptions.
Volkswagen’s cautious optimism reflects a broader sentiment across the automotive industry: short-term relief is welcome, but long-term supply chain resilience remains a strategic priority.
