Wales fly-half Dan Edwards has committed his future to Ospreys, signing a new deal with the Welsh region despite speculation linking him to Leicester Tigers.
The 22-year-old started all four of Wales’ autumn internationals and has been a key figure for Ospreys this season. His decision comes amid uncertainty in Welsh professional rugby, as the Welsh Rugby Union (WRU) plans to reduce the number of men’s professional clubs from four to three.
Edwards’ Commitment to Ospreys
Edwards joins fellow Wales internationals Keelan Giles, Harri Deaves, and Morgan Morse in signing fresh contracts with Ospreys. Head coach Mark Jones praised Edwards’ contribution:
“Dan is an instrumental figure for us. His ability to control play, make decisive runs, and lead the attack has been pivotal in evolving our style and scoring more tries over the past 12 months.”
Edwards, who began his rugby journey at Cwmafan RFC, has made 43 appearances for Ospreys and is set to pull the strings in the upcoming Challenge Cup and United Rugby Championship (URC) fixtures.
International Eligibility
By remaining in Wales, Edwards retains eligibility for the national team. Current WRU rules require players to have at least 25 caps to be selected if they play for a club outside Wales. Edwards has seven Test caps and will be central to Steve Tandy’s plans for the Six Nations 2026 campaign.
“Playing for Ospreys has always been a dream,” Edwards said. “We have a young, talented squad, and we’re determined to challenge the top teams and compete for silverware.”
Ospreys’ Future
The region’s future remains uncertain amid reports that Y11 Sports and Media are in talks to acquire WRU-owned Cardiff. Such a move could help the WRU reduce the men’s professional clubs to its planned three, while protecting contracts of players deemed of national interest.
