West Ham Appoint Rita Guarino as New Women’s Team Manager

West Ham United Women have confirmed the appointment of Rita Guarino as their new manager following the dismissal of Rehanne Skinner, as the club looks to revive its fortunes in the Women’s Super League (WSL).

Guarino, 54, has signed an 18-month contract and will take charge of the Hammers with immediate effect. The role marks the first managerial position of her career outside Italy, making the appointment a significant and ambitious step for both the club and the coach.

Proven Winner in Italian Football

Despite being relatively unknown to English audiences, Guarino arrives with an impressive pedigree. She previously managed Inter Milan Women from 2021 to 2024 and enjoyed major success at Juventus, where she guided the club to four consecutive Serie A titles.

In addition to her club achievements, Guarino has also served as head coach of Italy’s Under-17 women’s national team, further underlining her experience in elite player development.

Change After Difficult Start to WSL Season

West Ham moved quickly to appoint a replacement after Rehanne Skinner was sacked on Thursday, following a challenging campaign. Skinner won just one of the club’s 11 WSL matches this season, leaving the Hammers second-bottom of the table, only two points above Liverpool.

With the team struggling for form and confidence, Guarino’s immediate task will be to stabilise performances and results during the second half of the season.

Guarino Excited by West Ham Project

Speaking after her appointment, Guarino expressed enthusiasm about joining the London club and embracing the challenge of English football.

“I’m so happy to be joining West Ham,” she said. “It is a club with a big history and strong values that align with my own.”

“I’m really excited by the project here. There is a lot of talent and experience in the team, and I want to support the players to develop as individuals but also as a collective.”

January Transfer Window a Key Priority

One of Guarino’s first major responsibilities will be navigating the January transfer window, as West Ham look to strengthen their squad and climb away from danger in the WSL standings.

The Italian coach outlined her footballing philosophy, emphasising structure, intensity, and teamwork.

“I want to build a team that is organised, aggressive with the ball, and able to recognise and use space,” she said. “The mentality of the team—the togetherness and hard work—is the most important thing.”

Ambitious Move in the World’s Top League

West Ham’s decision to appoint Guarino represents a bold and forward-thinking move, bringing a highly decorated European coach into the most competitive women’s league in the world.

“I’m looking forward to the chapter ahead in the best league in the world,” Guarino added.

As the Hammers fight to move up the table, all eyes will be on how quickly Guarino can adapt to English football—and whether her proven success in Italy can translate to the WSL.
