Why Ex-Bayelsa Governor Sylva is Facing Political Prosecution – APC Chieftain Birakumo

An All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain and activist in Bayelsa State, John Ayebabomote Birakumo, has defended former Bayelsa Governor and ex-minister, Timiprye Sylva, saying he is currently facing political prosecution.

Birakumo made the statement on Monday, lending his support to Sylva, who was recently declared wanted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over alleged conspiracy and dishonest conversion of $14,859,257.

The allegations reportedly connect Sylva to the sponsorship of an alleged coup attempt in Nigeria, though the former governor has denied all charges.

Birakumo argued that Sylva’s legal troubles are politically motivated, asserting that his adversaries fear his influence in Nigerian politics:

“We are raising awareness to alert Bayelsans and the entire APC family that Chief Timiprye Sylva remains a committed and visionary leader of the APC. We are undeterred by the politically motivated persecution of Chief Sylva, knowing full well it is orchestrated by his detractors and political adversaries who fear his monumental influence not only in the state but across the region and nation.”

He added:

“Chief Sylva is a true democrat and statesman who has significantly contributed to Nigeria’s development.”
