A chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and former presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has revealed that he does not own any house or landed property in Abuja, explaining that the decision is a deliberate lifestyle choice.
Obi made this disclosure during a coffee hangout with KayhikersClub in Abuja, where he spoke about simplicity, contentment, and avoiding unnecessary stress.
According to him, owning property in the nation’s capital would only create avoidable pressure. “I don’t have a house in Abuja, I don’t have land, and I’m not planning to have one because I don’t need it,” he said.
“The more you accumulate these things, the more headaches you give yourself. For years, I have never been sick. Why would I be? It’s not necessary,” Obi added.
He recalled his time as Chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), stating that he declined official entitlements such as official vehicles, accommodation allowances, and sitting allowances.
“When I was announced as chairman, the Director-General showed me a Prado jeep and explained my accommodation allowance. I told him I only needed to attend meetings. I didn’t want a car, house, or sitting allowance,” Obi said.
Although he was informed that these benefits were his entitlement, Obi said he turned them down, insisting that whatever he truly needed had already been provided by God.
Obi also shared a similar experience from his tenure as Chairman of Fidelity Bank, where he was offered luxury vehicles such as a Mercedes-Benz S500 or a Range Rover.
“I told them I didn’t need any of that. I already had everything I required in my house. Unless you want to give yourself a headache, why bring these things?” he asked.
Emphasising his philosophy of contentment, Obi said he has enough for his needs and does not believe in unnecessary accumulation or public displays of wealth.
“I have enough. I don’t need to do giveaways. What I truly need, I already have,” he concluded.
