Wikipedia Partners with Microsoft, Meta, and Amazon to Support AI Training and Enterprise Access

The Wikimedia Foundation, the non-profit operator of Wikipedia, has announced new partnerships with several major technology companies, including Microsoft, Meta, and Amazon, marking a significant step in the organization’s effort to monetize its content for artificial intelligence (AI) training.

These agreements, revealed on Thursday, also include collaborations with AI startups such as Perplexity and France-based Mistral AI, joining existing arrangements with companies like Google, which partnered with Wikimedia in 2022.


Wikipedia Content as a Cornerstone for AI

Wikipedia’s vast repository of knowledge — over 65 million articles across more than 300 languages — has become a crucial component for training generative AI models, including chatbots and virtual assistants. Tech giants rely on this freely available content to develop large-scale AI systems, which has dramatically increased server usage and operational costs for the non-profit.

Historically funded primarily by small public donations, Wikimedia has faced challenges accommodating the high-volume data scraping required for AI model training. This has driven the organization to develop Wikimedia Enterprise, a commercial platform designed for tech companies to access Wikipedia’s content while supporting the foundation financially.

“Wikipedia is a critical component of these tech companies’ work that they need to figure out how to support financially,” said Lane Becker, president of Wikimedia Enterprise. “It took us a little while to understand the right set of features and functionality to offer if we’re going to move these companies from our free platform to a commercial platform … but all our Big Tech partners really see the need for them to commit to sustaining Wikipedia’s work.”


Big Tech’s Commitment to Sustainable AI Content

The new partnerships reflect a growing recognition among major technology firms of the need to sustain Wikipedia’s volunteer-driven content ecosystem. Microsoft, for instance, emphasized the importance of reliable, high-quality information in building the future of AI.

“Access to high‑quality, trustworthy information is at the heart of how we think about the future of AI at Microsoft,” said Tim Frank, Corporate Vice President at Microsoft. “With Wikimedia, we’re helping create a sustainable content ecosystem for the AI internet, where contributors are valued.”

Meta and Amazon have also integrated Wikipedia content into their AI training workflows, acknowledging both the value of the encyclopedia’s information and the necessity of supporting the platform financially.


Wikipedia Volunteers Remain Central

Despite the new enterprise arrangements, Wikipedia continues to rely on its global community of approximately 250,000 volunteer editors, who write, edit, and fact-check content to maintain accuracy and reliability. These volunteers remain the backbone of the platform, ensuring the quality of information that AI systems increasingly depend upon.

The Wikimedia Foundation’s approach represents a model for sustainable AI training, balancing corporate use of freely available knowledge with the non-profit’s need to secure resources for ongoing operations.


Leadership Update at Wikimedia

Adding to the organization’s transformation, Bernadette Meehan, former U.S. Ambassador to Chile, will assume the role of chief executive of the Wikimedia Foundation on 20 January 2026. Her appointment comes amid a push to expand enterprise partnerships and secure long-term funding for the global knowledge platform.
