A case of alleged medical negligence has left a family in mourning after Aishatu Umar, a Kano resident, reportedly died following months of severe abdominal pain caused by a pair of scissors allegedly left inside her body during surgery at the Abubakar Imam Urology Center.
According to SaharaReporters, Umar passed away on Monday at about 1 a.m., having endured unbearable pain for several months after a surgical operation in September 2025. The incident was publicly shared by Abubakar Mohammed, her brother-in-law, on Facebook. Umar is survived by her husband and five children.
Mohammed explained that the pain began shortly after the surgery. Despite repeated complaints, the hospital reportedly only administered pain medication and sent her home without conducting proper investigations.
“She suffered this pain for four months,” Mohammed said. It was not until two days before her death that comprehensive tests and scans were finally performed, revealing the shocking discovery: a pair of scissors had been left inside her body during the earlier surgery.
Attempts were reportedly made to prepare her for corrective surgery, but unfortunately, she passed away before the procedure could be performed.
The family has condemned the incident as a clear case of gross professional negligence, questioning how trained medical professionals could leave surgical instruments inside a patient. Mohammed said, “Is this not pure negligence? Every soul has its appointed time, but how can professional doctors forget scissors inside a patient?”
The tragedy has sparked calls for urgent action from the Kano State Government and health regulatory bodies to investigate the matter and hold those responsible accountable. The family demanded justice for Umar, highlighting the broader impact of such negligence on the reputation of healthcare workers in the state.
As of the filing of this report, neither the management of the Abubakar Imam Urology Center nor Kano State health authorities had issued an official response.
